Collections of apomictic plants

Botanical Museum (Finnish Museum of Natural History, University of Helsinki) is in possession of a large holding of apomictic plants that is kept separately from the other collections. Separated are all collections of Hieracium, Pilosella, Taraxacum (Asteraceae), and Ranunculus auricomus-group (Ranunculaceae). The collections are situated in a small wooden house at the northern side of the Botanical Garden in Kaisaniemi, City Center campus of the University.

Unlike in the other collections at the Botanical Museum, for historical reasons accession numbers are lacking in the collections of apomicts. The figures presented below show a recent estimation of the collection size (2012).

The herbarium of Hieracium and Pilosella is by far the greatest part of the holdings. Its Fennoscandian part is based on the personal collections of Johan Norrlin and Magnus Brenner who were among the greatest figures in the European hieraciology. The private collections of Norrlin and Brenner are still kept separately, numbering ca. 15.000 and 5.000 specimens, respectively. The original material is completely at H.

Other important collections of the Fennoscandian Hieracium include Thiodolf Saelan, Harald Lindberg, Alvar Palmgren, Bruno Malmio, Lars Fagerström (original material completely at H), Edvard Vainio (original material partly at H, partly at TUR), Juho Pekkarinen (original material at KUO but many duplicates at H), and Sten Nordenstam (material partly at H). Substantial collections of duplicates are from Hugo Dahlstedt (original material at S).

The herbarium of Taraxacum is based on the collections of Magnus Brenner, Harald Lindberg, Gunnar Marklund, Carl-Eric Sonck (original material completely at H), Artturi Railonsala (original material at OULU but many duplicates at H), Bernard Saarsoo (personal collection at H is kept separately). These collections document the Taraxacum research in Finland, north-western Russia and the Baltic countries.

The herbarium of Ranunculus auricomus-group includes the so-called aggregates R. auricomus, R. fallax, R. cassubicus, and R. monophyllus. It is based on the collections of Gunnar Marklund, Lars Fagerström, Gustav Kvist, and Akseli Valta (complete at H). Many duplicates were received from Erik Julin (original material at UPS). The Ranunculus collections mostly concern Finland and the neighbouring areas of Russia.
