Natural History Museum

The Natural History Museum's free entrance days are targeted for individuals and groups other than early childhood education and educational institution groups.

Days with free entrance to the Natural History Museum in 2024:
Wednesday 14.2.,10.4., 12.6., 14.8., 9.10. and 11.12.2024, open 10 am – 5 pm.

NB! The museum’s dining area for packed lunches is not in use on free entrance days. There are picnic tables in the museum courtyard for eating snacks.

Free visits for groups from educational institutions

Daycare, school and other educational groups (maximum 30 persons/group) can book free visits from Luomus' booking calendar. Free visiting times are available in January-April and September-December.

Bookable times open in the booking calendar:
- Visit in January-February: booking opens on 11.12.2023 at 2 pm
- Visit in March-April: booking opens 12.2.2024 at 2 p.m.
- Visit in September-October: booking opens on 19.8.2024 at 2 p.m.
- Visit in November-December: booking opens 7.10.2024 at 2 p.m.


Accepted methods of payment 

Cash, bank/credit cards (Visa, Visa Electron and MasterCard) Smartum 5-euro-Liikunta- ja Kulttuuriseteli ”culture voucher”, SmartumPay, Epassi app and Museum Card. Groups may also pay their entrance fees by invoice. N.B.! Invoices can only be sent to Finnish postal addresses. The invoice is filled in when arriving to the museum. For billing please take with you the necessary billing information (including business ID for registered organizations and businesses). Billing fee is 8 €.


Culture Companion operation 

The Natural History Museum is part of the Culture Companion operation. The operation is intended for everyone who finds it difficult to visit a cultural attraction, or who would prefer to visit an attraction accompanied by another person. A voluntary culture companion will accompany you at the Natural History Museum and assist or guide you to the museum, if necessary. The botanic gardens in Kaisaniemi and Kumpula are also part of the Culture Companion operation. 


How to get there

The Natural History Museum is located on Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu 13 in the centre of Helsinki, behind the Parliament House. The building can be recognized from the Moose-statue next to the main entrance. It's only a few minutes’ walk to the museum from the Central Railway Station and bus stops.

Public transport

The Natural History Museum is located near the bus and metro stations in Kamppi. It’s only a walk from the Central Railway Station and the Eliel Square. The tram routes 1 and 2 stop outside the museum.

Bus number 24 (Merikatu-Seurasaari) stops at the Pohjoinen Rautatiekatu, near the museum.

Parking space

There are two accessible parking spaces in the courtyard. Please, give us a call (tel. 02941 28800) if you are in need of accessible parking. The P-Presidentti car park is situated near the museum. The streets close-by also have paid parking space.

NB! There is no telephone service (apart from the cash desk) during school holidays: weeks 52-2 (Christmas), week 8 (winter break), weeks 25–31 (summer break), week 42 (autumn break), and midweek holidays.

Café and museum shop

The Natural History Museum has a café and a museum shop. They’re located on the first floor and maintained by Ruokalähettiläs Oy. You can contact the café and shop by phone: +358400 286202.

Audio guided tours in English, French and Russian

You can listen to an audio-guided tour on your own mobile device by connecting to the museum's free wifi and visiting www.luomus.fi/en/audio-guided-tours. We recommend that you bring your own headphones. The audio guided tours available are in English, French and Russian.

Cloakroom and safety boxes

Coat racks and safety boxes with locks can be found in the lobby. If you leave possessions, you do so at your own risk.

Ice cleats and spike shoes

If you come to the museum with spike shoes, bring indoor shoes with you. Please leave ice cleats ans spike shoes in the cloakroom to prevent our old wooden floors from being scratched. 

Eating and refreshing

You can eat packed lunch on the stairhead of the 4th floor. Eating in the exhibitions is forbidden.

Taking pictures and filming

You may take pictures in the museum for your own use. If you intend to publish any pictures, you must mention the location. Taking pictures for commercial use must be discussed beforehand.

Wifi

We have a free wifi ("Helsinki UniGuest"). The wifi password is in the lobby.

Restrictions

Pets are not allowed in the museum. Guide dogs and service dogs are welcome.


Accessibility

The museum is fully accessible (with the exception of a small section in the Finnish Nature -exhibition). There is an elevator and an accessible toilet / a nursery room in the lobby. 
Baby strollers are allowed inside the museum.

- The Natural History Museum is a disability card destination.

- Accessible entrance for physically handicapped or for people with prams or strollers is available through the courtyard. If arriving by wheelchair, walker or with a large pram or stroller, please, contact the cash desk (tel. 02941 28800) so that we can open the courtyard gate for you.

- There are two accessible parking spaces in the courtyard. Please, give us a call (tel. 02941 28800) if you are in need of accessible parking. 

- Personal assistants have free entry to the museum.

- Guide dogs and service dogs are welcome at the museum.

- Induction loops are installed at the ticket desk.

- One rental wheelchair and two rental strollers are available on a first-come, first-served basis at the ticket desk.
